Cepsa y Air Nostrum, la compañía líder de la aviación regional en España y una de las mayores aerolíneas europeas de su clase, han firmado hoy un acuerdo para impulsar la descarbonización del transporte aéreo mediante la investigación y producción de nuevos combustibles sostenibles para la aviación (SAF, por sus siglas en inglés).
Estos combustibles, que permiten reducir las emisiones de la aviación hasta en un 80% respecto al queroseno convencional, se producirán a partir de materias primas circulares que no compiten con la alimentación, como aceites usados de cocina, desechos animales de uso no alimentario o restos biodegradables procedentes de distintas industrias.
Asimismo, la alianza también contempla el desarrollo de nuevas alternativas energéticas, como el hidrógeno renovable y la electrificación, para las flotas terrestres de Air Nostrum: vehículos para el suministro, las operaciones de carga y descarga de equipajes, o asistencia a los aviones, entre otros.
Tras la firma del acuerdo, que ha tenido lugar en Valencia, Carlos Barrasa, director de Commercial & Clean Energies de Cepsa ha destacado:
“Mediante acuerdos como el que alcanzamos hoy con Air Nostrum trabajamos al mismo tiempo por el futuro del planeta y por el presente de nuestros clientes. Nuestro objetivo es acompañarlos en sus procesos de descarbonización y juntos avanzar más rápido en la apuesta por la sostenibilidad.”
Por su parte, Carlos Bertomeu, presidente de Air Nostrum ha subrayado: “En Air Nostrum estamos haciendo, desde hace ya muchos años, todo lo que está en nuestra mano para reducir la huella de carbono; por eso, no es casualidad que Air Nostrum fuese la primera aerolínea española en obtener la exigente certificación medioambiental ISO14001. Desde entonces, hemos avanzado mucho en este campo aplicando procesos y tecnologías encaminadas a conseguir este reto, y vamos a seguir investigando y apoyando a aquellos proyectos que nos permitan trabajar en favor del medio ambiente.
Hoy se hace realidad nuestra participación en esta alianza para la descarbonización del sector aéreo junto a Cepsa. El acuerdo que presentamos es un buen ejemplo de compromiso firme y a largo plazo con la sostenibilidad y está en línea con los esfuerzos que han permitido a la aviación comercial reducir en un 80% sus emisiones de CO2 por asiento/kilómetro en los últimos 50 años. La descarbonización del sector necesariamente comienza por el SAF ya que su utilización como combustible sostenible no exige la adaptación de los motores de los aviones”.
Esta alianza se enmarca en la apuesta de Cepsa por los combustibles sostenibles, tras los acuerdos firmados por la compañía con otras importantes aerolíneas, y está en línea con la iniciativa legislativa europea ‘RefuelEU Aviation’, incluida en las medidas Fit for 55 de la Comisión Europea, que pretende impulsar la oferta y demanda de combustibles sostenibles para la aviación en la Unión Europea, alcanzando un uso del 2% en 2025, el 5% en 2030 y el 63% en 2050.
Los combustibles sostenibles para la aviación (SAF) se han convertido en un elemento fundamental para asegurar la sostenibilidad sector del transporte aéreo. Mediante este acuerdo, Cepsa y Air Nostrum podrán seguir reduciendo su huella de carbono y contribuir en la transición energética y la lucha contra el cambio climático. Esta alianza apoya varios de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible: ODS 7 (garantizar el acceso a una energía asequible, segura, sostenible y moderna), ODS 8 (promover el crecimiento económico inclusivo y sostenible, el empleo y el trabajo digno), ODS 12 (garantizar modalidades de consumo y producción sostenibles) y ODS 13 (adoptar medidas urgentes para combatir el cambio climático y sus efectos).
En este sentido, Cepsa está trabajando en un ambicioso plan, que presentará el 30 de marzo, para dar un giro verde a todos sus negocios y convertirse en un referente de la transición energética en su sector. Además, la compañía cuenta con una amplia experiencia en este ámbito: produce combustibles sostenibles en sus centros industriales desde hace una década y desarrolla estudios pioneros a nivel mundial para convertir residuos y aceites usados en combustibles de origen renovable de alto valor energético.
Air Nostrum trabaja en la reducción de emisiones mediante proyectos de eficiencia en vuelo, usando SAF, mejorando las políticas de reducción de combustible y aligerando peso a bordo de la mano de la digitalización. Y también colaborando estrechamente con los distintos agentes de la cadena como fabricantes, productores y distribuidores de combustible y startups, como ha hecho en 2021 con la firma de varios acuerdos encaminados a buscar nuevas fórmulas de propulsión más sostenibles. En paralelo, desarrolla proyectos de economía circular y de gestión de residuos como la reducción de plásticos de un solo uso o la segregación a bordo y en tierra, proyectos de eficiencia energética en instalaciones y electrificación de la flota terrestre.
